Jaded or Realistic?

I have lots of friends who complain about Valentine's Day. They say that it's a Hallmark holiday and just a sham. I've never bought into that. I kind of liked Valentine's Day. I like buying gifts and doing stuff. I just like holidays in general. So, one that encourages us to remind the special people in our life that we love them seemed like a good idea.

But now I'm busy. I know my hubby loves me, he knows I love him. Enough said. I have a test tomorrow and I don't want to even think about V-day. I also don't like the pressure of the questions after Vday. "Did you get anything good", "What did you get him". I'm considering giving very racy and inappropriate answers so that no one will ask me again.

My daughter is excited about Vday. I think we should get the kids a little something, but what? I tend to go overboard- and I really don't want to do that. I'd love to get my daughter flowers from her daddy, but then what for the boys? She got a Valentine from someone special already, so I'm not sure what to do.

Also, what about teachers? I always just gave my teacher the "teacher card" that came in the cheesy box of Valentines. That does not seem to be the standard anymore. Bob is baking brownies for her little guys teacher. I'm out of oil, I can't make brownies.

I'm thinking my friends were right. I'm ready to get rid of Vday.

I FEEL THE SAME WAY! I SPENT 2 HOURS AT WALMART YESTERDAY TRYING TO THINK OF SOMETHING GOOD FOR THE BOYS AND THE ONLY THING I BOUGHT WERE 2 CHEAP BOXES OF CHOCOLATES THAT HAD A PICTURE OF A FROG AND A PUPPY OR SOMETHING! IS THAT ENOUGH OR IS THE THOUGHT ENOUGH! AT OUR SCHOOL WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BRING IN HOME BAKED GOODS IT ALL HAS TO BE BOUGHT AND WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING AT 28 KIDS! THAT GETS EXPENSIVE! HOWEVER WHEN I THINK THAT SOMEONE MIGHT TAKE A SLIGHT MOMENT TO PICK ME UP SOMETHING I GET VERY EXCITED! I THINK WE SPEND TOO MUCH TIME TRYING TO PLEASE EVERYONE AND STRESSING WHETHER OR NOT WE GOT THEM THE BEST GIFT IN STEAD OF JUST LETTING THEM KNOW WE LOVE THEM AND WERE THINKING OF THEM! TO TOP IT OFF MY ANNIVERSARY IS ON WEDNESDAY AND THEN THE ACTUAL DATE OF OUR FIRST DATE IS THIRDAY! SO WHAT DO YOU DO???? DO YOU GET A PRESENT FOR EACH OR CELEBRATE THEM SEPERATELY? WELL I HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A GREAT V-DAY!

Get rid of the hassle of V-day! It is the thought that counts.

When I was a kid, I got candy from my parents on V-day. That was enough for me.

Who can afford to go out and buy something really nice for their spouse? Dust and I exchange cards and go out to eat. I put no pressure to give me flowers.

"I put no pressure to give me flowers."

Now she tells me!

I hadn't thought through how having kids might dramatically increase the responsibility surrounding this holiday.

I don't really care for Valentine's Day because of the questions. Not the questions that people ask me, but rather the questions I know they'll ask Golden. If I came up with a stupid gift or arrangement of flowers that'll be judged. I like the idea of taking the opportunity to focus some time on your significant other, though.

I would recommend you give the inapropriate answers except that I think that will encourage the questions to continue. Even I want to ask you now just to see what you'll say.

I am sick of the attitude that is associated with this holiday. There is no way in God's green earth that i am going to get flowers. I have been listening to talk radio and over the last two weeks I have heard nothing but flower and jewelery commercials. The commercials paint the guys as a dult who forgot about valentines day and can't think of anything last minute - and these commercials reassure that they still have diamond necklaces and roses.

I told Magrelo to NEVER get me flowers on Valentine's day. The price is jacked up like 300% higher than normal. When you're dating, that cool. When you're married, that's just my checkbook it's coming out of. I went to Hallmark and got the girls a small chocolate heart for each of them. Then I went to the store and got Monkey an assortment of grapes and watermelon. He's not really into chocolate, but he Loves fruit. He was the most excited. Magrelo got Hallmark's Michael Buble (sp?) cd of love songs. (6.99) He loves Michael Buble. I told him that I'm get my own Valentine's present, so don't mess with it.

Dust, trust me, don't ask. I'd make you blush.

What is wrong with you people? Hello? Valentines day is one of my favorite holidays! It's about love and hotness and chocolate covered strawberries and big chocolate heart boxes and romance and jewelry and a special surprise from someone you love! How awesome. How perfect. I know... I know... that the stores totally get you right where they want you...but forget about them. This is about you making your main squeeze feel totally loved and special! If you don't have much money this year... no big deal...use your imagination. If you don't have time this year... just do something little and simple but don't get stressed over it to get or give what everybody else gets. Valentines day rocks whether I get something "fabulous" or not...all that matters to me is that my sweetie shows me and makes sure I know that he totally loves me... no pressure;)

Forrest, the reason the guys are portrayed as dolts who need to find an obligatory gift is that this is the precise target audience of the ads. They certainly aren't targeting guys like you who make pieces of art for every holiday. ;)

Rushmore, I am always blushing. What's new?

GIGI - some of us don't need a special day to be loved and treated like that.

Hi S,
Just out in blog land looking around, and wanted to stop and thank you for the comments to my swim party post. Valentine's Day this year was much different than in years past, it has been $100 at Victoria's Secret for a long time, this year I did roses on her windshield instead. Speaking of school teachers, C made a project at his boy's club, it was a wooden heart with an arrow through it, he brought it home and was very proud. I asked him what we should do with it, and he said was going to give it to his teacher. What a thoughtful little guy huh?. Hope all is well, take care.
