Christmas

I Love Christmas! It's almost time for snow, and decorations, and holiday music, and incredible food. Once Halloween is over, I'm ready for Christmas. Growing up, my family's holiday traditions were:

Christmas Eve: dinner at my house with just mom and dad. We had oyster stew and really gross potato soup. I got to open one gift before bed. I spent weeks deciding what gift I would choose. It stunk when I guessed wrong and picked one that had clothes for that special gift.

Christmas Day: Wake up and discover, once again, that Santa does exist. Open presents and go to gma and gpas. Sometimes my cousins would be there, but often they would be at their other gmas and wouldn't make it over until much later. A few times my brothercousin & sistercousin would come from Kansas. That made Christmas really cool. (And sometimes meant no oyster stew!)

Our traditions now are:

Day after Thanksgiving: Early morning shopping. Late afternoon-Cut down the tree and decorate it
Christmas Eve: The whole clan celebrates. We get to eat good food. Oyster stew is gone FOREVER! I love Christmas Eve
Christmas Day: My children realize once more that Santa does exist. Cinnamon rolls and naps for mom and dad while the kids play with the new toys. Last year we had people over Christmas night and it was fun. I want to do this every year as well.

My point is, I love the holidays and I love traditions. I want to start new traditions that my kids will remember fondly. One of my friends told me they are doing Advent this year. I don't really know what that means, but I'm going to check into it? Any other fun traditions that I can steal?

Every christmas from the time Tyler first learned to read, he always reads the christmas story out of his bible before we open presents on christmas morning.

On Christmas eve, we get all dressed up and we all go to figlios on the plaza and then go up to the "skies" restaurant for drinks and the kids get yummy froo-froo non-alchoholic drinks. And we just sit and watch the lights outside the big windows at the "skies". (Hey... isn't that where you were asked to get hitched?)

Last year we went to the Christmas Eve service at church (or first one to attend.) We ALL loved it (even though cman fell asleep for a little while :) ) Then we came home to the christmas lights and decorations and talked about the service and ate cookies and drank apple juice/cider and hot chocolate (depending on taste preferances and allergies.) We all agreed we'd do this again this year. We also opened gifts up afterwards too. I like Christmas Eve night gift exchange, Then the kids get up Christmas, we sleep in and they play with all their new stuff in toy bliss!

Growing up, my family always opened one gift on Christmas Eve. My mom always pointed out which one would be the most fun to open. (to avoid opening clothes)

My family always decorated our Christmas tree after Thanksgiving dinner. Michigan always plays football on Thanksgiving and that was a highlight for my dad and brother.

here's one you can steal:
we always have a birthday cake for Jesus on christmas. and we sing happy birthday and decorate it christmas eve. I think when my uncle was really little he asked my grandma why Jesus didn't get a birthday cake, just like they did on their birthday. My grandma makes birthday cakes for us to decorate every christmas eve. oooh and we sing happy b-day to Jesus on Christmas too.

oooh and we just added the tradition of making a gingerbread house (I forget when we exactly do this one) but it's really fun. might not be as good for you guys since your kids are quite a bit younger than me and my sister.

The gingerbread house is something that I have been threatening to do for a while. Now that I have finished all my architectural exams and do not have a newborn in november, I am going to do it this year.

My aunt got me all the equipment and books a few years ago. My only problem is that I should take it slow to begin with and not try something to extravagant...(think halloween costumes.)

I remember a few times as a kid my mom and her sister would so a gingerbread house on thanksgiving day and I would try to eat all the candies.

My favorite Christmas tradition is to buy a new ornament for the tree for everyone in the family (especially the kids) based on what they were into at that point in their lives. It is fun to look back every year while decorating the tree and remember the past. I have ornaments for each of my kids every year, and my own that go back to the year I was born. It helps to remind us of what is most important in life. Merry Christmas!
